Your first month in Singapore: a practical checklist for international students

The first month becomes easier when immigration, housing, transport and emergency information are prepared as separate workstreams.

The short answer

Carry the documents listed by your school and ICA, including the IPA where applicable.

Inspect the room and save the manager, school and emergency contacts on arrival.

Test the school journey before the first class and use the same payment card or device to tap in and out on public transport.

Before departure: create one verified arrival folder

Keep the school admission information, ICA instructions, flight details, accommodation address, manager contact and an offline copy of key documents together. Follow the latest instructions in the IPA letter and from the school.

  • Passport and entry documents required for the trip
  • School reporting date, campus address and contact
  • Accommodation building address and check-in arrangement
  • Payment method that works in Singapore

Arrival day: verify the room before unpacking

Check keys, furniture, appliances, air-conditioning, bathroom arrangements and shared areas. Photograph existing marks or defects and record them on the bilingual move-in checklist.

Confirm the normal channel for maintenance, cleaning coordination and urgent accommodation issues. Keep public emergency numbers separate from routine management contacts.

First week: rehearse the school day

Use LTA journey tools to test the route at the time you expect to travel. Save the station exits, bus stops and a backup route rather than relying on a single screenshot.

Public transport accepts several contactless options. Foreign-issued cards may carry an administration fee, so compare the cost with a local stored-value option after arrival.

First month: build routines before adding extras

Locate a supermarket, clinic, pharmacy and safe late-evening route near the accommodation. Keep receipts, rent records and important messages in one folder.

Discuss repair or cleaning issues early. If plans change, ask about renewal or move-out notice requirements before making travel commitments.

Common questions

Should I buy a Singapore transport card immediately?

Not necessarily. Contactless cards and mobile wallets may work, but compare any foreign-card fees and confirm your card is enabled for overseas use.

What should I photograph at move-in?

Photograph the room, furniture, appliances, bathroom, shared areas and any existing marks. Match the photos to the written checklist.

Who should I call in a life-threatening emergency?

Call 995 for fire or emergency ambulance services. Call 999 when immediate police assistance is required.
